Acts of the Spirit Retreat — Cancelled
The Acts of the Spirit Retreat scheduled for 11–13 September 2026 will no longer be going ahead. We’re disappointed to cancel, but we’re already hoping to offer something similar in 2027.

You are invited to be renewed and refreshed on your Jesus journey by coming to a Retreat Weekend where we will immerse ourselves in the amazing story of the first Christians, and what this story means for us today.
The weekend is built around five teaching and learning sessions based around the Book of Acts, there will be times for devotion reflection and discussion, and Sunday worship at St Petri. And we will be refreshed by tea breaks, meals, times to relax, an excursion, and a special dinner.

OVERVIEW //
We live in uncertain times and many people are feeling a bit lost. Where are we going? What is life all about? Is the church losing its way too?
The earliest followers of Jesus were called ‘People of the Way’. In Jesus, they knew who they were, they knew where they were going, and they knew they were on a mission. The amazing story of the first Christians going out into the world was written down in a book called ‘The Acts of the Apostles’. That title was added later, and it is fine. Another fitting name for the book would be ‘Acts of the Spirit’, because it was the Spirit who empowered them, as Jesus promised: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem … and to the ends of the earth (1:8).
Here we are at the ends of the earth, and 2000 years later this promise and this power are also for us, for we too are people of the Way, the way of Jesus.

Session 1: Introducing the Acts of the Spirit The place of Acts in the New Testament and the Christian story. ‘You shall be my witnesses’: The witness of the first Christians in deed and word.
Session 2: The Gospel grows in Jerusalem and Judea Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost and the birth of the Christian community.
Session 3: The Gospel spreads beyond old borders Spirit-led evangelists spread the Word in Samaria, toward Africa, and beyond Judea.
Session 4: From Jerusalem to Rome The Gospel spreads in the Gentile world. The missionary journeys and speeches of Paul.
Session 5: The Gospel to the ends of the earth Getting our Acts together: our part in this great story of salvation.

ABOUT HOST //
About Rev Dr Dean Zweck
Dean is a pastor of the Lutheran Church and served at ALC as lecturer in church history and supervisor for overseas students. From time to time he also taught in the New Testament area.
He has been in missionary service in Papua New Guinea for many years, first as a pastor and then as a teacher in two seminaries. On returning to Australia, he served as pastor and then was called to Luther Seminary (ALC).
He taught in a field that covers 2000 years of Christian history. It is the story of the gospel running its course, and we need to know about it because it connects us and our stories with The Story.
Dean will be leading us on a journey through the Book of Acts and connecting us with how the Spirit is at work in our own lives and times today.

Please let us know of any dietary needs on the registration form, including gluten free, dairy free, or other. Outside of noted special requirements, we ask that you don’t bring your own food, as costs remain the same regardless of dietary requirements.

What meals are provided?
Morning tea and lunch are included in both the Full Retreat and Sessions-only options. Saturday dinner and Sunday lunch are optional extras, and are included as part of the Full Retreat option.
Can I bring my own food?
BYO food isn’t permitted, except for exceptional dietary needs. Please note any dietary requirements (Gluten Free, Dairy Free, or Other) on the registration form – the cost stays the same regardless.
What’s the mystery bus trip?
On Saturday afternoon (3:00–5:00pm) there’s an optional bus trip to a local winery and a mystery location, with drinks and nibbles included.
Do I need to attend all five sessions?
The retreat is built around all five teaching sessions running from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, alongside worship, meals and the excursion. If you have questions about your specific participation, please get in touch with the Regional Learning Hub.
